“When my kids were younger, I wanted to start a tradition that could be carried out every year at Christmas.”
At the time, I loved baking, and so I did the gingerbread house thing. The kids loved decorating after I constructed, we even had a competition one year on who did the best house.
I can’t tell you how many years it’s been going on for now, but I’m pretty sure it’s never been skipped and I’m so proud of myself to carry this on. Even when sometimes it’s been left to the last minute, cooked before traveling and constructed once at our destination, or I really can’t be bothered and think why the heck did I start this tradition!?
I recall times when my brother was around for Christmas and he would continue to head back over the house, myself included, not being able to stop ourselves picking at it because that’s what you do at Christmas.
“I’m so proud of myself to carry this on”
The reason why I’m sharing this story is because I wanted you to know how important it is to create a tradition, not only for yourself, your kids or your family but to make those memories of fun, laughter and excitement.
Creating a tradition is about so much more than just the act itself—it’s about building memories that will last a lifetime. My gingerbread house tradition may have started as a fun activity with my kids, but it became a symbol of togetherness, laughter, and those cherished moments we share year after year.
Whether it’s the joy of decorating or the funny moments of sneaking a bite when no one’s looking, these are the experiences that stay with us. So, if you haven’t already, start your own tradition. It doesn’t have to be grand—it just has to be meaningful.
Not a baker or lover of the kitchen?
An annual Christmas photo could be a simple way to start.
Understanding the need to have cherished moments like these, is the exact reason why I started offering regular photo sessions for Christmas.
